PrintRanbaxy announced Tuesday the launch of generic versions of Pfizer's Lipitor (atorvastatin) in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden. The launch of the product comes approximately two months ahead of patent expiries in the four countries after the Indian drugmaker reached agreements with Pfizer.
According to Ranbaxy, it will market 10 milligram, 20 milligram, 40 milligram and 80 milligram doses of the drug in Germany, Italy and Sweden, but the highest dose will not be available in the Netherlands. The company noted that it will promote the drug directly to "all channel partners including retail pharmacies and wholesalers" in Italy and the Netherlands. In Sweden, Ranbaxy said it will offer the product through the official pricing and reimbursement scheme covering generic medicines to all retail pharmacies.
Pfizer's patent on Lipitor expires in the Netherlands and Sweden on May 6 and on May 8 in Italy. In Germany, where the drug is sold as Sortis, the patent expires on May 7. Ranbaxy indicated that 2011 sales of Lipitor reached $377 million in Italy, $164.4 million in the Netherlands and $55 million in Sweden.
In November, Ranbaxy was the first to launch a generic version of Lipitor in the US following expiration of the product's patent and was also the first to launch a generic version of the drug in Australia, where it has three months of exclusivity.
